Reference / Trade
Activewear HS codes and base import duty rates.
What buyers need to know
Classification first, costing second.
Every duty rate follows from one thing: the HS classification of the garment. This reference lists the codes activewear actually ships under, the base duty rate in the US, EU and UK, and the official lookups to verify current rates — including any additional trade measures, which this table deliberately excludes.
Why almost everything here is Chapter 61
The HS splits garments by construction before anything else: Chapter 61 is knitted or crocheted, Chapter 62 is woven. Leggings, sports bras, performance tees, seamless pieces and most jackets in an activewear range are knits — so classification starts at 61, and only woven shells or accessories leave it.
How to read the code
The first six digits are international and set by the World Customs Organization — 6104.63 means the same garment family in every member country. Digits seven onward are national: the US extends to ten digits with its own rate lines, the EU and UK to eight or ten. That is why this table gives the six-digit family plus each market’s base rate, not one universal number.
What this table deliberately leaves out
Base rates are not the whole bill for every origin. Additional measures — such as US Section 301 tariffs on China-origin apparel and the further US actions of 2025 — sit on top of the base rate and change with trade policy, sometimes within a year. Any table that hard-codes them goes stale silently. Look the current figure up at the official source below on the day you cost a program, and enter it separately in the landed cost calculator.
Open the landed cost calculator 04US: Harmonized Tariff Schedule (USITC)
The official US lookup. Search by code or description; the “General” column is the base rate this table quotes. Duty in the US is assessed on the FOB customs value.
hts.usitc.gov 05EU: TARIC database
The EU’s integrated tariff. Rates shown here are the erga omnes (third-country) rates; EU duty is assessed on the CIF customs value.
TARIC consultation 06UK: Trade Tariff lookup
The UK Global Tariff applies post-Brexit; most knit apparel lines mirror the inherited EU rate. Verify per ten-digit line before costing.
gov.uk/trade-tariffClassification is your declaration
The importer of record owns the classification, not the supplier. A partner can and should propose the code with the commercial documents — SEAMDANCE does, per style — but the binding answer for an edge case is a ruling from your customs authority, not anyone’s spreadsheet. When a garment could plausibly sit in two lines, that ruling is cheap insurance against a retroactive bill.
