Fabric & fiber
- GSM (grams per square metre)
GSM (grams per square metre) is the standard measure of knit fabric weight: the weight in grams of one square metre of fabric. Higher GSM means denser, heavier, usually more opaque fabric; most activewear legging fabrics sit in the widely cited 220-320 GSM range.
For buyers, GSM is the quickest spec check for squat-proof opacity and cost, since heavier fabric uses more yarn and costs more per metre. State the target GSM in the tech pack and have bulk fabric weighed against it, because quietly dropping GSM is a classic cost-cutting move.
- Denier
Denier is the unit of yarn fineness: the weight in grams of 9,000 metres of yarn. Lower denier means a finer filament and a lighter, silkier fabric; higher denier yarns knit into thicker, more durable and more opaque fabrics.
Denier appears on nylon and polyester fabric specs alongside GSM, and reading both together shows whether weight comes from fine, densely knitted yarn (premium hand feel) or coarse yarn (cheaper and harsher). Ask the mill for the yarn specification, not just the finished fabric weight.
- Four-way stretch & recovery
Four-way stretch means a fabric stretches in both directions, across the width and along the length; recovery is its ability to snap back to its original shape after stretching. Together they decide whether leggings move with the body and resist bagging at knees and seat.
Both properties come from elastane content plus knit construction, and recovery is what fails first in cheap fabric even when the stretch feels fine in hand. Stretch-and-hold swatches and wear-test finished samples for growth before approving bulk.
- Spandex / Elastane
Spandex and elastane are two names for the same synthetic stretch fibre, best known under the Lycra brand, able to stretch to several times its length and recover. Activewear fabrics typically blend 8-30% spandex with nylon or polyester for stretch and shape retention.
The elastane percentage drives stretch power, compression and price, and it is the most fragile fibre in the blend, degrading with high heat, chlorine and prolonged UV. Check tested fibre content against the spec, because elastane share is a common place for blends to drift.
- Nylon (polyamide)
Nylon, also called polyamide (PA), is a synthetic fibre prized in activewear for its soft, smooth hand feel, high strength and abrasion resistance. Blended with elastane, it produces the buttery-feel legging fabrics associated with premium yoga wear.
Nylon usually costs more than polyester and dries slightly slower, but it wins on hand feel and durability, which is why premium yoga lines default to nylon-elastane. Check PA versus PES on spec sheets and test reports to catch quiet substitution.
- Polyester
Polyester (PES) is the most widely used synthetic fibre in sportswear: hydrophobic, quick-drying, colourfast and lower-cost than nylon. It holds sublimation prints exceptionally well, and its recycled form, rPET, is the basis of most GRS-certified activewear fabrics.
Buyers typically choose polyester for training, running and printed styles, accepting a slightly less soft hand than nylon unless the fabric is brushed. Switching to recycled polyester is usually the lowest-friction sustainability upgrade, since rPET performs like virgin polyester.
- Brushed fabric
Brushed fabric has been mechanically finished with fine brushes that raise a soft, peach-skin surface on one or both sides. In activewear, brushing turns standard nylon- or polyester-elastane knits into the buttery-soft handfeel popularised by premium legging brands.
Brushing adds a finishing cost and, if overdone, can raise pilling risk and weaken the fabric surface. Confirm whether the fabric is brushed on one side or both, and wash-test samples to see how the surface holds up.
- Hand feel
Hand feel, or simply hand, is how a fabric feels when touched: its softness, smoothness, weight, drape and coolness. It is the textile trade's standard term for the tactile quality buyers compare between fabric options, and a major purchase driver in activewear.
Because hand feel is subjective, approve it physically from swatches and keep a reference swatch attached to the sealed sample. Describing feel only in words in a tech pack invites substitution disputes later.
- Moisture wicking
Moisture wicking is a fabric's ability to pull sweat off the skin and spread it across the surface to evaporate quickly, keeping the wearer dry. It works through capillary action in hydrophobic synthetic yarns, sometimes boosted by chemical finishes.
Wicking that comes from yarn and knit structure lasts the life of the garment, while topical wicking finishes wash out over time. Ask which one the mill relies on, and verify with absorbency and drying-rate testing rather than trusting the word wicking on a spec sheet.
- Colour fastness
Colour fastness is a dyed fabric's resistance to fading or bleeding when exposed to washing, rubbing (crocking), perspiration, water and light. It is graded on standard 1-5 scales, with 5 the best; low ratings mean colour transfers onto skin, sofas or other garments.
Sweat plus friction is exactly how activewear is used, so perspiration and rub fastness matter more here than in fashion basics. Include fastness testing on bulk dye lots for dark and saturated colours rather than relying on lab-dip approval alone.
- Pilling
Pilling is the formation of small balls of tangled fibre on a fabric's surface, caused by rubbing during wear and washing. It is assessed with standardised abrasion tests such as Martindale and rated 1-5, where 5 means no pilling.
Leggings pill first at the inner thighs and wherever bags or belts rub, and brushed surfaces pill more readily than smooth ones. Ask for a pilling rating in the fabric test report and wear-test samples before committing to bulk.
- Compression fabric
Compression fabric is a high-elastane, high-recovery knit engineered to apply firm, even pressure to the body, supporting muscles and creating a locked-in feel. It is heavier and more powerful than standard legging fabric, with clearly higher resistance when stretched.
Actual compression comes from fabric power combined with a pattern cut smaller than body size, so the two must be developed together. Decide the target compression level per style and confirm it with on-body fit trials, not fabric specs alone.
- UPF rating
UPF (ultraviolet protection factor) rates how much UV radiation a fabric blocks: UPF 50 fabric lets through only one-fiftieth of UV, blocking about 98%. UPF 50+ is the highest standard claim, common on outdoor training, running and swim styles.
Protection drops when fabric is stretched, wet or worn thin, which is precisely how activewear is used. Have UPF tested on production fabric to a recognised standard such as AATCC 183 or AS/NZS 4399 before putting the claim on labels or listings.
- Interlock & circular knitting
Circular knitting produces fabric as a continuous tube on rotating needle beds and is how most activewear fabric is made. Interlock is a premium circular-knit structure: a double knit, smooth on both faces, denser and more stable than single jersey, favoured for leggings.
Two fabrics at the same GSM can behave completely differently if the knit structure differs, so name the structure in the tech pack rather than specifying weight alone. Interlock's two smooth faces bring opacity and a clean print surface at a higher price than jersey.
Construction & fit
- Seamless knitting
Seamless knitting produces a garment as a near-complete tube on specialised circular machines, eliminating most side seams. Zones of compression, ventilation and rib can be knitted directly into the fabric, giving the smooth, chafe-free fit typical of seamless bras and base layers.
Seamless requires dedicated machinery and yarn programming, so it comes from a different supplier base than cut-and-sew, usually with its own minimums. Sizing is also less flexible, since garment width is tied to machine diameter, and small linking and cutting operations still remain.
- Cut and sew
Cut and sew is the standard garment construction method: fabric is produced as yardage, cut into pattern pieces, and sewn together. It allows unlimited freedom in silhouettes, panels and colour-blocking, and is how most leggings, shorts, bras and jackets are made.
Quality in cut-and-sew lives in the pattern and seam engineering rather than the machine, which makes switching suppliers easier than in seamless. The fabric mill and the sewing factory are often separate companies, so agree who is responsible for fabric quality.
- Flatlock seam
A flatlock seam joins two fabric edges butted flat against each other with interlocking thread, leaving no raised ridge inside the garment. It is the classic anti-chafe seam for activewear worn next to skin, recognisable by its flat ladder of stitching.
True flatlock needs a dedicated machine, and some factories imitate the look by covering a conventional seam with a coverstitch, which is slightly bulkier. Specify in the tech pack whether you require genuine flatlock or accept mock flatlock.
- Coverstitch
A coverstitch is a stretch-friendly stitch formed by two or more needles with a looper thread covering the raw edge, showing parallel lines on the face and a flat grid underneath. It is the standard finish for activewear hems, waistbands and binding.
Because the stitch stretches with the fabric, hems finished with it survive squats without cracking. Check stitch density and tension on samples; skipped or broken stitches at hems are among the most common defects found at final inspection.
- Bonded seam
A bonded seam joins fabric panels with heat-activated adhesive film or ultrasonic welding instead of thread, creating a completely flat, stitch-free join. Bonding is used on premium second-skin leggings, bra bands and pocket edges where zero bulk is wanted.
Bonding demands compatible synthetic fabrics, precise equipment and tight process control, and the failure mode is edges peeling after repeated washing. Ask for wash-cycle test results and evidence of the factory's bonding track record before committing a style to it.
- Gusset
A gusset is a separate fabric panel, usually diamond or oval shaped, sewn into the crotch of leggings and shorts. It removes the bulky four-seam intersection, improving comfort, durability, modesty and freedom of movement; in many styles it is lined with cotton.
Gusset construction is one of the details reviews and returns data punish quickly when it is wrong. Specify the gusset shape, lining fibre and seam finish in the tech pack rather than leaving it to factory default.
- Grading (size grading)
Grading is scaling a garment's base-size pattern up and down to create the full size range, applying set increments, called grade rules, at each point of measure. Good grading keeps fit and proportion consistent from the smallest size to the largest.
Stretch garments do not grade linearly, because negative ease behaves differently across body sizes, so a range graded by simple arithmetic often fails at the extremes. Approve a full size set on bodies, not just the base size.
- Fit sample & size set
A fit sample is a garment made to evaluate fit on a real body or fit form, usually in the base size. A size set is the full run of sizes produced after grading, used to confirm the fit holds across the whole range.
Fit rounds are where sampling timelines usually slip, so measure each sample flat against the spec before on-body review and document comments per round. Only grade and cut a size set once the base size is genuinely settled.
- Tech pack
A tech pack is the technical specification document for a garment: flat sketches, a measurement chart with tolerances, fabric and trim details, colorways, construction and stitch callouts, and labelling and packing instructions. It is the brief a factory quotes from and is judged against.
A complete tech pack gets sharper quotes, fewer sample rounds and enforceable quality control, because defects are defined against it. Without one, the factory fills every gap with its own defaults.
- Pattern (garment)
A garment pattern is the set of flat templates, one per fabric piece, from which a garment is cut, encoding its shape, ease and seam allowances. Activewear patterns are drafted with negative ease, cut smaller than body measurements so stretch fabric fits firmly.
Pattern quality drives fit more than fabric choice does, and pattern ownership matters commercially: if the factory drafts your patterns, agree in advance whether you may take them when you move production. Treat proven patterns as brand assets.
- Colorway
A colorway is one specific colour combination in which a style is offered; the same legging in black, sage and burgundy is one style in three colorways. Each colorway carries its own lab dips, sampling approvals and, usually, its own minimum order quantity.
Because MOQs and dye lots apply per colorway rather than per style, a wide colour range multiplies both cost and risk. Plan the colour assortment against MOQ maths before finalising the collection.
Sampling & production
- Lab dip & strike-off
A lab dip is a small fabric swatch dyed to match a requested solid colour, submitted for approval before bulk dyeing. A strike-off is the print equivalent: a test print showing colours, scale and repeat. Both lock colour down before production begins.
Assess lab dips in a light box under agreed lighting and against textile-specific Pantone TCX references, since colours shift between screen, paper and fabric. Each colour or print approval adds time to the critical path, so submit and approve them in batches.
- Sealed sample
A sealed sample is an approved sample physically tagged and signed by both buyer and supplier as the binding quality reference for bulk production. Inspections judge bulk goods against the sealed sample, not against emails, photos or memory.
Keep identical sealed counterparts on both sides, and give inspectors access to one at final inspection. If you accept a deviation later, re-seal it in writing, or the change is unenforceable.
- Pre-production sample (PP sample)
A pre-production (PP) sample is the final sample made with actual bulk fabric, trims, colours and labels before mass production starts. Its approval is the green light for bulk: anything unresolved at PP stage will be reproduced across the entire order.
Insist the PP sample uses bulk-dyed fabric rather than sample-room substitutes, or it proves nothing about the order. Approving PP samples from photos alone is a false economy for hand feel and colour.
- Salesman sample (SMS)
A salesman sample (SMS) is a small batch of near-final samples made for showrooms, wholesale selling, photo shoots and pre-launch marketing before bulk production. SMS runs let a brand present and sell a collection while manufacturing is still underway.
SMS pieces are usually made in the sample room at a higher unit price than bulk. Confirm that SMS fabric and colours will match bulk closely enough to shoot e-commerce photography from them.
- Bulk production
Bulk production is the main manufacturing run of an order once samples and materials are approved: fabric is dyed and relaxed, cut, sewn, finished, labelled and packed in commercial quantity. Everything before bulk is preparation; everything after is inspection and shipping.
Bulk quality is largely set in the first days of cutting and sewing, when correction is still possible and cheap. Track work-in-progress milestones, such as fabric in-house, cutting started and percentage packed, instead of waiting silently for the ship date.
- Inline & final random inspection
An inline inspection checks quality during production, as early goods come off the line, so defects are corrected while there is still time. A final random inspection (FRI) checks finished, packed goods against an AQL sampling plan before shipment is released.
FRI is typically booked once goods are fully produced and at least 80% packed, and it is the buyer's last point of leverage before the balance payment. Inline inspection is what actually prevents defects; FRI only finds them.
- AQL 2.5
AQL 2.5 is the acceptance quality limit most apparel buyers apply to major defects at final inspection. Sample sizes and pass/fail numbers come from ISO 2859-1 statistical tables, and a lot fails if the defects found exceed the acceptance number for AQL 2.5.
AQL 2.5 for major defects, often paired with AQL 4.0 for minors, is the de facto standard for retail-grade apparel; tighter limits are possible but raise inspection and rework cost. SEAMDANCE inspects to AQL 2.5 before shipment.
- QC (quality control)
QC (quality control) is the system of checks that keeps production within specification: fabric testing, measurement audits, inline checks during sewing and final random inspection before shipment. In garment sourcing it covers both the factory's internal QC staff and independent third-party inspections.
A QC finding is only enforceable if the standard was agreed in writing beforehand, so define defects against the tech pack and sealed sample in the purchase order. Decide early which checks the factory performs and which go to an independent party.
- MOQ
MOQ (minimum order quantity) is the smallest quantity a supplier will accept for an order, usually set per style and per colour. It exists because fabric dyeing, cutting and production-line setup carry fixed costs that only make sense spread across enough units.
MOQs fall when you use a supplier's stocked fabrics and colours, and rise for custom-dyed Pantone shades, where minimum dye-lot size drives the number. SEAMDANCE stock programs start at 100 pieces, custom colour development at 300-500 pieces per style.
- Lead time
Lead time is the total time from confirmed order to goods ready or delivered, covering material procurement, fabric dyeing, sewing, finishing, inspection and freight. Sampling and approvals run on their own clock before production lead time even starts.
The longest single block is usually fabric dyeing and finishing rather than sewing, so fabric decisions move delivery dates more than factory choice does. Confirm whether a quoted lead time starts at deposit received or at final approvals, a gap that regularly costs weeks.
Compliance & certification
- OEKO-TEX Standard 100
OEKO-TEX Standard 100 is a product-level certification confirming a textile article, whether fabric, trim or finished garment, has been laboratory-tested against an annually updated catalogue of harmful substances, with limits often stricter than law. Certificates are issued to a specific company for specific articles.
The certificate belongs to the mill or factory that holds it and covers only the articles in its scope; a brand or intermediary cannot hold it by association. Ask suppliers for the certificate number and verify it on the OEKO-TEX validity check before repeating the claim.
- GOTS
GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) certifies textiles made from organic natural fibres across the whole processing chain, from spinning through dyeing to sewing, with environmental and social criteria. The organic grade requires at least 95% certified organic fibre; the made-with-organic grade requires 70%.
Every processing and trading company in the chain must hold its own GOTS certification for the finished garment to carry the label, so verify each supplier's scope certificate and ask for transaction certificates with shipments. GOTS also caps synthetic fibre share, which constrains high-elastane activewear.
- GRS
GRS (Global Recycled Standard) certifies products containing recycled materials, verifying recycled content through the supply chain along with social, environmental and chemical criteria. A product needs at least 20% recycled content for GRS certification and at least 50% to carry the GRS logo.
GRS certification is held at company and site level by each certified mill or factory, with chain of custody proven by transaction certificates issued per shipment. A buyer making recycled claims should collect those transaction certificates, not just a certificate PDF. In activewear, GRS content is usually recycled polyester (rPET).
- BSCI
BSCI (amfori Business Social Compliance Initiative) is a social-compliance audit system that assesses factories on labour practices, including working hours, wages, health and safety and child-labour prevention, grading results from A to E. It is a facility audit, not a product certification.
The audit result belongs to the specific audited factory, so ask for the current report for the site that will actually sew your goods; group companies sometimes present a sister factory's audit. Read the findings, not just the letter grade.
- REACH
REACH is the EU's chemicals regulation: Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals. For garments, its restriction list limits substances in textiles sold in the EU, including certain azo dyes, phthalates and heavy metals, regardless of where the goods were manufactured.
Compliance responsibility sits with the EU importer, meaning the brand, not the factory. A supplier's blanket REACH-compliant statement is weak evidence; name the restricted substances relevant to your materials and require test reports on production lots.
- PFAS
PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) are the so-called forever chemicals historically used in durable water-repellent and stain-resistant textile finishes. They persist in the environment and the human body, and jurisdictions including California and New York now ban intentionally added PFAS in apparel.
Most activewear needs no PFAS, but contamination can still surface in total-fluorine screening of fabrics and trims. Require written PFAS-free confirmations for any water-repellent finish and screen high-risk styles before selling into states with bans.
- Prop 65
Prop 65 (California Proposition 65) is a state law requiring businesses to warn Californians about exposure to listed chemicals, a list of roughly 900 substances including certain phthalates, heavy metals and BPA. Garments sold into California need compliant chemical levels or a Prop 65 warning.
Enforcement runs through private plaintiff lawsuits, and activewear has been a repeat target, notably over BPA in polyester-elastane sports bras. Many brands test to limits derived from past settlements rather than adding warning labels.
- Azo dyes
Azo dyes are the largest family of synthetic textile dyes. Most are safe, but a specific subset can break down into carcinogenic aromatic amines, and the EU bans textiles that release those amines above 30 mg/kg, with most major markets restricting them similarly.
The risk is controlled at the dyehouse, so the practical mitigation is sourcing from mills that use compliant dyestuffs and spot-testing dark and saturated colours. A one-line azo-free declaration without test data is weak evidence.
- Care label
A care label is the permanent label carrying washing, drying, bleaching and ironing instructions, shown as symbols or text depending on the market. In the US, the FTC requires a reasonable basis, meaning actual evidence, behind the care instructions a brand puts on a garment.
Elastane-rich activewear generally needs conservative care instructions, because heat is what kills stretch fabric. Responsibility for accurate, supportable care labelling sits with the brand as importer, so keep the wash-test data that justifies your labels.
- Fibre content label
A fibre content label states the generic fibre names and percentages in a garment, for example 76% nylon, 24% elastane, and is required in most markets. Declared percentages must match actual composition within legal tolerances, using generic names rather than brand names.
Mills' nominal blends can drift from what is actually knitted, and the brand, not the mill, is liable for mislabelling. Verify composition with lab testing on bulk fabric rather than copying the spec sheet onto labels.
- Digital Product Passport (DPP)
A Digital Product Passport (DPP) is a structured digital record, accessed through a data carrier such as a QR code, holding a product's material, origin and sustainability data. Under the EU's ESPR, DPPs will become mandatory for textiles sold in the EU in phases.
The hard part for buyers is that much of the required data sits upstream with mills and dyehouses they have never dealt with directly. Start collecting supplier and material data now, because retrofitting it at deadline time will be far harder.
- RSL (Restricted Substances List)
An RSL (Restricted Substances List) is a brand's or industry group's list of chemicals restricted in finished products, with a limit for each substance. It converts scattered legal requirements such as REACH and Prop 65 into one testable specification that suppliers must meet.
Most brands adopt an established industry RSL, such as AFIRM's, instead of drafting their own. Make RSL compliance part of purchase-order terms and back it with risk-based testing on the styles and colours most likely to fail.
Trade & logistics
- FOB
FOB (Free On Board) is the Incoterm under which the seller delivers goods export-cleared and loaded on the vessel at the named origin port; from that moment freight, insurance and risk belong to the buyer. It is the most common quoting basis in apparel sourcing.
FOB makes factory prices comparable because every quote ends at the same point, the origin port. The buyer controls and pays the main freight leg, which in practice means appointing a freight forwarder.
- EXW
EXW (Ex Works) is the Incoterm where the seller only makes goods available at their own premises, and the buyer arranges everything after: pickup, export clearance, freight and import. It produces the lowest quoted price but the heaviest buyer-side burden.
EXW quotes look cheapest on paper, but a foreign buyer handling export clearance out of China is rarely practical. Most buyers convert EXW quotes to FOB before comparing suppliers.
- CIF
CIF (Cost, Insurance and Freight) is the Incoterm where the seller pays freight and minimum insurance to the named destination port, but risk transfers to the buyer once goods are loaded at origin. The buyer still handles import clearance, duty and onward delivery.
CIF feels convenient but hands carrier choice to the seller, and cheap CIF rates are sometimes subsidised by inflated destination charges collected from the buyer. Compare offers on landed cost, not the headline CIF price.
- DDP
DDP (Delivered Duty Paid) is the Incoterm where the seller handles everything to the buyer's named address: freight, export and import clearance, duties and taxes. The buyer receives goods at a single all-in price with no further charges to pay.
DDP is the simplest option for small brands without an import setup, but check how customs entries are declared, because undervalued DDP declarations create liability in the buyer's market. Clarify who acts as importer of record.
- HS code
An HS code is the numeric classification assigned to traded goods under the World Customs Organization's Harmonized System; the first six digits are standard worldwide, extended locally for tariff detail. Knitted activewear classifies under Chapter 61, and the code sets the duty rate.
Small differences, knit versus woven, fibre majority, men's versus women's, change the code and the duty. Confirm classifications with your customs broker rather than copying the supplier's invoice, since misclassification means back-duties and penalties for the importer.
- Landed cost
Landed cost is the true total cost of getting a product into your warehouse: factory price plus freight, insurance, customs duty and taxes, brokerage and local delivery. Margin calculations should be built on landed cost per unit, not on the factory price.
Duty is the most commonly forgotten line, and it varies with HS code, fibre content and origin. Two suppliers with identical FOB prices can produce different landed costs once freight lane and duty treatment are included.
- LCL / FCL
LCL (less than container load) means your cargo shares a container with other shippers' goods; FCL (full container load) means you book the entire container. LCL suits smaller orders but adds handling fees and consolidation time; FCL becomes cheaper per unit as volume grows.
LCL destination charges are billed per cubic metre and escalate quickly, so beyond a certain volume a partly empty FCL container beats LCL. Ask your forwarder to quote both, and remember LCL cargo is handled more, raising damage risk.
- Proforma invoice (PI)
A proforma invoice (PI) is the supplier's pre-shipment document confirming products, quantities, unit prices, trade terms and payment terms before payment is made. Buyers pay deposits against the PI, and in most China sourcing it functions as the working order confirmation.
The PI is where commercial terms become real, so check the Incoterm, quantity tolerances and bank details line by line. Verify any change of bank account through a separate channel, because invoice-hijacking fraud targets exactly this document.
- T/T payment
T/T (telegraphic transfer) is payment by international bank wire, the default payment method in garment sourcing. Orders are commonly paid as a T/T deposit against the proforma invoice, typically 30%, with the balance wired before shipment or against shipping documents.
Time the balance payment after the final inspection passes and before container release, which keeps quality leverage without breaching terms. Confirm beneficiary details independently before every wire; supplier email accounts do get compromised.
- Consolidated shipment
A consolidated shipment combines goods from multiple suppliers or multiple orders into one export shipment moving under a single set of shipping documents. Brands buying from several factories consolidate to cut per-shipment fixed costs, simplify customs clearance and receive one delivery instead of several.
Consolidation needs an origin warehouse and a party able to act as exporter of record across suppliers. Plan the timeline around the slowest supplier, because the shipment only moves when the last goods arrive.
Business models
- Private label vs white label
Private label means products manufactured to a brand's own specification and sold under that brand's name. White label means a ready-made generic product that multiple brands rebrand as-is. The difference is customisation depth: private label is built for you, white label is relabelled stock.
Many activewear brands launch on white-label or stock programmes for low minimums and speed, then shift into private-label development, with custom fabrics, fit and trims, as volume grows. Suppliers use both terms loosely, so confirm exactly what can be customised at your quantity.
- OEM
OEM (original equipment manufacturer) production means a factory manufactures goods to the buyer's own designs and specifications, sold under the buyer's brand. ODM (original design manufacturer) production means the factory supplies its own existing designs, which the buyer selects, lightly modifies and sells under its own brand. The buyer trades design originality for speed, lower cost and lower minimums, since patterns and materials already exist.
ODM is the fastest route to a first collection, but the designs are non-exclusive unless exclusivity is negotiated, so competitors can sell near-identical products. A common path is launching on ODM styles and layering in OEM development once sales prove demand.
