Sourcing origin
China, Vietnam or Portugal for activewear?
What buyers need to know
Where to manufacture activewear, and why we focus on one.
An honest comparison of the main activewear sourcing origins — and why SEAMDANCE runs programs in China rather than claiming to do everything everywhere. We would rather run one origin well than broker three we cannot stand behind.
China — the technical activewear base
Seamless knitting, performance fabrics, dye houses and trims sit in one dense ecosystem, with fast sampling and wide colour choice. For technical activewear — compression, seamless, four-way stretch — it is the hardest origin to match on capability and total cost.
Vietnam — cheaper labour, imported tech
Labour can be lower and some markets carry tariff advantages, but performance fabrics are often imported from China and the seamless and technical ecosystem is shallower. For basic cut-and-sew the gap is small; for technical activewear it usually is not.
Portugal — close to Europe, higher cost
Strong for EU proximity, small batches and fast reorders under EU compliance, but unit costs are higher and the activewear scale is smaller. A fit for some European brands, not for cost-led technical programs.
Why we focus on China
We are a China-based team and we do not claim Vietnam or Portugal capacity. If your market has a China-specific tariff that outweighs the capability gap, or you need Portugal proximity, we will tell you honestly rather than take a program we cannot run best.
How we run China production01Should I manufacture activewear in China, Vietnam or Portugal?
For technical activewear, China has the deepest ecosystem — seamless knitting, performance fabrics, dye houses and trims in one place, with fast sampling. Vietnam offers lower labour and some tariff advantages but often imports its performance fabric from China and has a shallower seamless base. Portugal is strong for EU proximity and small fast reorders but costs more and runs at smaller scale. For compression and seamless activewear specifically, China is the hardest to match.
02Why does SEAMDANCE focus on China?
We are a China-based trading and supply chain team, and China has the deepest activewear supply chain in one ecosystem. We do not claim Vietnam or Portugal capacity — we would rather run one origin well than broker three we cannot stand behind.
03Is Vietnam cheaper than China for activewear?
Vietnam labour can be lower, but performance fabrics are frequently imported from China, which narrows the gap, and the seamless and technical ecosystem is less developed. For basic cut-and-sew the difference is small; for technical activewear China usually wins on total cost and capability, not just unit price.
04What about tariffs and duties, China versus Vietnam?
Duties depend on your market — some categories from China carry additional tariffs into the US, while certain trade agreements favour Vietnam. This can matter for your landed cost, and we help you weigh it honestly. Our capability, though, is China; we will not pretend otherwise to win the program.
05When is China not the right choice?
If your market has a China-specific tariff that outweighs the capability gap, or you need Portugal-level proximity for weeks-fast EU reorders, another origin may fit better. We would tell you that directly rather than take on a program we could not run best.
